Jimmy Iovine is always bold and confident with his assertions – if he’s right he gets bolder and if he’s wrong he moves on. His GQ question and answer interview for Men Of The Year is no exception. Conviction is not lacking. After all, the GQ title is “The Music Legend Who Just Might Save Apple.” … save Apple?!! — the most profitable company on the planet today…
Iovine says he “convinced them (Apple) that they had to buy this company (Beats)… I think it was two years before they said yeah.”
With the purchase of Beats, Apple made Iovine an Apple executive “to help the company imagine the future and, in the words of Iovine, “make a service that is as compelling as the music.”
At least from the tone of this interview, it’s more and more apparent that Apple bought Beats to focus on growing the Beats Music streaming service; or at least re-brand or incorporate it into iTunes.
The interview is a quick read and spits out some good quotes. Here is one more from Iovine:
[David] Geffen’s been telling me for thirty years: “Don’t define yourself by your job, or else you’re not going to be able to move forward. You’ll be trapped.” He pounded that into my head.
